Title:                                     Veterinary Intern/Veterinary Medical Associate

Food Animal Production and Clinical Medicine

Period of Internship:  One year.  Preferred dates are June 19, 2007 through June 16, 2008 (although start date is negotiable).

 

Closing Date:  Applicant screening will begin April 1, 2007, and will continue until a suitable pool of applicants is identified.  Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

 

Internship Summary:

 

The Veterinary Medical Associate (VMA) is responsible for the in-patient clinic animals and clinical instruction of senior veterinary students during a two-week interval each month, with mentoring of the veterinary faculty, allowing them hands-on experience in the diagnosis and treatment of all patients entering the hospital during that time.  If students are not available, the VMA will be responsible for treatment and handling of the clinical cases.

 

During the second, two-week interval each month, the VMA will participate in and assist with all aspects of herd health, dairy production medicine, nutrition, and field disease investigations associated with the Caine Center’s mission and be involved in student instruction in these endeavors, particularly in the area of Production Medicine.

 

Caine Center Program:

 

The Caine Center offers year-round two- to four-week rotations in the specialties of production animal medicine, particularly dairy and beef cattle and small ruminants to students in their senior year of veterinary school.  In addition to the referral teaching hospital at the Center, there are also opportunities to participate in a wide range of field disease investigation activities.  Active research, service and outreach programs include Johne’s disease in cattle, scrapie and prion diseases, wildlife and domestic livestock disease interactions, and veterinary diagnostic and consultation services including pathology, microbiology, clinical pathology, histopathology, immunohistochemistry and (limited) virology.

 

 

Learning Opportunities:

Participates in and assists with instruction of professional veterinary curriculum in food animal production medicine by:

Carrying out 2 weeks of clinical duties per month, including weekend duty twice per month for care and monitoring of in-patient medical cases; leading discussions of symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of cases with other faculty members, students, and interested parties in daily rounds; directing students on doing courses of treatment and surgery; summarizing case records; contacting and reporting results to owners or veterinarians; directing or assisting with lifting and/or restraint of large food animals; performing other duties as may be indicated in operation of a food animal teaching hospital.

Participates in herd health and field disease investigation instruction activities by:

Carrying out field disease investigations; establishing herd health/production medicine programs, utilizing outside farms for the purpose of instructing students; and developing teaching materials.

 

 

Qualifications:

Required

·         DVM or equivalent degree

·         Strong commitment to the ethical practice of veterinary medicine

·         Willingness to be present after normal business hours (evenings and weekends, as required)

·         Physical ability to lift and move approximately 75-90 lbs.

·         Demonstrated ability to work well with students, clients, and co-workers

·         Good oral and written communication skills

·         Ability to read and write the English language

·         Have and maintain a valid driver’s license

 

Additional Desirable:

·         Food animal practice experience

·         Advanced degree, or board certification (or eligibility) in nutrition, surgery, theriogenology, or other related field

 

Benefits and Internship Schedule:

·         To obtain experience and training in the veterinary medicine field.

·         Stipend of $23,504/year, payable in 26 biweekly installments of $904 per biweek, for the period described in this announcement.

·         Normal business hours of 8 am – 5 pm, Monday-Friday, plus evening and weekend work as required by caseload.
